    Hi,
I am flying into Dubrovnik airport next week. Then hoping to make my way south down the coast of Montenegro. Has anybody any tips for me on where to go/avoid or reviews of where they have been. I am planning on just booking accommodation in tourist information centres on the day i arrive. Would it be worth my while to rent a car or use the bus service? (Young couple 25-30 age group)

    Any advice appreciated,
    Thanks,
    Pat

I drove there a few times. Depends on what you like to do really. For me it was worth it to drive because I like stopping and taking photos whenever. If you want to stick to just the touristy places then buses are fine.

One place that is often passed over is Herceg Novi. I loved the place. Not a place you could spend too long in, but it's nice and it's great to see a place without the crowds. The scenery around Kotor is amazing, but I wasn't too pushed about the town itself. Maybe it was just because it was so crowdy and was a bit expensive.

I wrote about my roadtrip there here. Has links to my photos and all there but I've just realised the photos are from my bus tour there, and my photos from the time I drove are much better as they weren't taken out a bus window. That may answer your question! Tolls in Croatia are a bitch though.

    Hey Dory,
Thanks for the link to your blog it is a great read and photos are amazing! Was planning on going to Herceg Novi first actually and going to the blue cave there it sounds good. Think i might go for the car as I would like to have a bit of freedom and not be tied down to the touristy spots.
Thanks again for the advice appreciate it

When we went to Montenegro in 2009 we did it by bus and visited both these towns and it was great... Kotor is a bit of a cruise ship stop but it is lovely, and the people are really friendly, and Budva is a bit of a beach/party town, with loads of beach bars etc - it was so relaxing, and exactly what we were after.

With regards to accomodation, I wouldn't book anything and I wouldn't go near the tourist info offices either - head to the bus station - you'll find loads of people there offering private rooms for rent in the towns - we did this in both towns and got our own room, kitchen, bathroom in both places for €20 per night. It was great. Its what everyone does so don't be afraid of it, and remember to haggle!
