Question about Ryanair and passports

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, so mods move it if it is.

My mother has to go to London from Dublin this day next week to visit a sick aunt.

Her passport expires Jan 2012. But 2 people said to her today that they knew people that had issue's with Ryanair because the passport must be more than 6 months before the expiry date? My first thought was what is the point of having an expiry date if this is true.

I rang Ryanair and the 2 people in customer services with very bad English said they never heard of that, so great.

But now a 3rd person has said the same thing.

Has anyone heard of this or can confirm there will be no issue?

my last passport expired the day after i flew with ryanair.
that was 4 years ago, not sure if its changed since.

As far as I'm aware, the six month bit only applies to travelling to Spain.

Thanks for all the quick responses. I was 99.9% sure i was right.

And what would be the point of an expiration date if it was true. Any other airline and i wouldnt have posted here but you know what Ryanair are like

No, not even Spain requires this. EU law specifically forbids any EU governments from enacting such laws. Your EU passport is valid until the day of its expiry for travel within the EU, no exceptions.

Your Mother will be fine, that rule only applies if you're travelling outside the EU or are holders of a non-EU passport. Mostly airlines going to USA, Australia, Arab countries etc and they state it when you're booking the flight if it is a requirement.

It's the country you're travelling to who makes the requirements, not the airline. If you're unsure contact the relevant embassy, but withing the EU you can travel with an EU passport up until the date your passport expires.

If you are going to Morocco you have to have a passport that dosn't expire within 6 months. This applies to all airlines flying from there.

my dad's expired in february. when we were leaving the terminal to get on the plane the lady looking at the passport said "your passport is nearly up", so she saw there was another month in it and politely reminded him.
