DVB-t is for terrestrial television, you'll need an aerial of sorts, if no external one an indoor one may be ok if your near a transmitter

DVB-c is for digital cable. It wont work with UPC here anyways so this isnt an option for you.

DVB-S is for satellite and unless you have a sat dis to hook it up to then this isnt what you're looking for.

one of the tuners here shoudl do you nicely. Unless you live right beside a transmitter you'll need a Powered UHF indoor aerial instal of teh little one supplied.

So which tuner can you plug into a standard UPC cable?I have UPC digital, but upstairs I just have the UPC cable analogue which is what I want my laptop to plug into.

Its not the cable that the problem, its the encryption. you can gat the signal on a dvb-c card but cant decode it.

How come I can get some channels when I plug the cable into a standard TV? (about 14 channels)

Thats just an analog signal and you would need an analog reciever card. The Avermedia super007 which I picked up on e-bay for 15 euros which I use for saorview on my htpc also has an analog tuner as well as a dvb-t

I haven't been able to confirm but some people are reporting some of the UPC digital channels on the dvb-c as unencrypted. I think its for test purposes. It is illegal however to view these channels without a UPC subscription.

Problem with that scenario is WAF (wife acceptance factor). If you have a channel working and then next day its not she will give you hell. Its best not to have any channels on the available menu that could disappear randomly at anytime.
