    Hi,
We are currently trying identify the specific number of Oncologists worldwide. Trying to attain exact numbers has proven extremely difficult.

We have managed to receive the number of registered Oncologists in Ireland. We have contacted ASCO and the American Medical Council to no avail.

If there are any Oncologists that would know where we could attain these figures or who would be willing to give us any insight or leads it would be highly appreciated, as it is integral for the purpose of our project.
    Thanks in advance.

Define what you mean by oncologist?

    Medical Oncologist?
    Radiation Oncologist?
    Surgical Oncologist?

Oncology is very multi-disciplinary, most oncology patients would see more than one type of doctor during the different phases of their treatment. In Ireland we don't have specialist positions in surgical oncology (although we have people with specialist training in the field), thus oncologic surgery is carried out by people who sometimes carry out other surgery too.

Thanks for getting back to me. Apologies I should have been more precise with my question.
I am looking for the number of:
    1) Medical oncologists in the world
    2) Trainee medical oncologists in the world
    3) Cardio thoracic surgeons in the world
The number of cardio thoracic surgeons is the least important of the three.
Thanks very much for your help.

    Can I ask why?

It seems a very specific question. I would imagine there is a very big difference between a med onc or surgeon in the first one and one in the third world.

Ya,no problem. I am currently doing a project for my masters, the project is a support system for oncologists. I need to get a rough estimate of how many people would use the system.

Isn't that going to depend hugely on the type of practice they are in. Someone practicing as the single med onc in a developing country might be looking for an internet based system. Those is a large cancer-specific US hospital are probably more likely to turn to colleagues for support.

Your going to find it very hard/impossilbe to get a worldwide figure on this.
However if you restrict it to say a country, or even English spekaing countries you might have more success trying to pin these figures down.

Thanks for your help. I have tried emailing the various oncology associations and have got very little back. If I could get a figure for just English speaking countries that would be great?

Try the medical licensing bodies perhaps ? They may have a register by specialty ?!?!

Registration in the US is by state and most of them allow you to search by speciality (e.g. Arizona). Tedious but it will get you some of the info you need.
