Dual screens problem

Hi I have dual screens set up but when I open programs they're opening in the center of the screens rather than an individual one. I went into the setup and when I try to identify the screens it just shows the number 1 in the middle as if it's recognising the dual screens as one big screen, anyone have any ideas how to solve this?

In the dialog box for setting up the screens there will be a dropdown option to select how you want to monitors to act. You have to choose "Extend the display" to get the two monitors to be separate.

Sorry I can't do a screen shot, but I don't have two monitors here :(

How are the two monitors connected at the back?
Both by the same ports or different?
What operating system are you using?

The below is from Win7 - it shows the set-up of my dual monitors.
Have or can you adjust the "Multiple Displays" setting?
