    Hi,

I've a general query re notice period.

If one intends to leave in in 3 months, but ones minimum notice period is shorter (1 week!) is it wise to give more notice than required?

    What are the possible consequences?

The possible consequences are that if your new job were to fall through for whatever reason then you'd be in a pretty awkward position. Keep your options open, give the required notice only.

I gave 3 months notice when I was going travelling as I wanted to leave on good terms. It gave them time to get in a replacement and get them trained up.
It worked too as I got back in there 18 months later when I came home

For the reason given it would be unwise to give notice now plus it is very possible that were your employer to identify a need to shed staff you will definitely find yourself top of the sacking list.

It really depends on your employers. You might have a good relationship with them, but after giving notice you are essentially an outgoing employee, and their attitude towards you will probably change. 3 months of that is a long time, but do consider giving them a little extra time.

It also depends on how quickly they can replace you.

Three months is a very long time.

Maybe compromise and give them one months notice. That's time enough to hire for general jobs, but short enough that you won't be made too miserable.

As others have said, the answer is entirely dependant on the job and your relationship with your manager. I am sure that the extra notice would be appreciated if it will allow them to fill your job before you leave.

However I would recommend that even if you give your boss notice that you do not mention it to your co-workers as people that are leaving often become invisible in the workplace and that can affect the quality of your work as you work out your time.

Either way, it will really help your boss if you can prepare a plan for handing your work over to your replacement or even training in your replacement, this will also leave your boss with a good impression of you as someone that supported him and cared about your job even as you leave. (Just in case you need to come back or need a reference)

If your job is one that "anyone can be trained to do" you could go one step further and recommend an unemployed friend for the job, offering to train him before he starts. That way you get a friend a job and have a happy ex employer.

If you're heading off traveling then it doesn't realy matter.

But if you're going to another job the don't give extra notice
The new job might fall through.

And the boss might view you as someone who won't care anymore. Been done to me and others when I had to give two months notice you get stuck in a corner doing donkey work like filing. You are pretty much dead to them and despite my good attendance I was late once and they questioned did I even care anymore and would I be late everyday.
