USB Dongle - Windows installing drivers each time ?

Quick one folks - using a USB dongle (originally from 3, flashed with generic firmware). Seems like every time I plug it in to my Windows 7 netbook, Windows starts the "Installing device drivers" craic ?

I would have thought, in my innocence, that this process would only have to be done once per machine ?

You stick it in the same USB port all the time?
It is normal if it installs every time you use a not previously used port.

And do you use "remove hardware" every time you take the dongle out or do you just rip it out of the port while the netbook is still running?

Oh, probably haven't been using the same port now that you mention it.
Do I have to be a good boy when removing it too ?

No. By default, Windows optimises mass storage devices for fast removal, meaning you don't need to stop it before removing.

Well, i once blew up a motherboard not using the "remove hardware/usb device" down there at the bottom of your screen at the clock.
But 99,9% of the time it goes ok.

If you dont use that method, that might also be a reason while it needs to install again after sticking it in the usb port again.

Faulty hardware more likely. Not telling the OS before you plug it out is not going to blow up the motherboard. Shorting the power out would however do the trick.

Also unlikely. Once the driver is installed, it shouldn't need to be installed again, and proper/improper removal won't effect that. Something else is going on, like the driver isn't installing properly at all, or the user may not have administrative privileges.

Those USB dongles contained a virtual CD memory section. (I know,I have one).

That's what's running everytime you load it.
