    Hi All,

Not sure if i have this in the right place, but does anyone know if there is a grant availible for the upgrade of a standard septic tank to one of them new found fancy bio cycle job's, i am asking as my parents have to do this work soon and it is exspensive to get carried out.

I am sure i seen a post on Boards were someone said they were getting a grant for this type of work.

There is a form of partial grant available from your Local Council. I started a job a while back for a very similar situation, the owners had no toilet facility though:eek:, seriously. Small half acre cottage in the sticks.

All I can advise is contact your local council office, grants department, and they will advise you more accuratley.

All work obviously had to be done by C2 registered contractors, as it's a grant so no chance of DIY. Also, this has dragged on as the distribution of funds to LA's has being curtailed and the "fund" run's out early in the year.

Why are YOU asking your parents to upgrade their septic tank to a treatment system? Is it not working? If not why? Also, probably cheaper to do remedial works to the existing system than to upgrade to a TS..

Not sure what its called in other counties but there was a "essential repairs grant" (ERG) available to OAP's in Donegal. It covered various things including the provision of bathrooms and sewage treatment systems. There was also a DPG (disabled persons grant) which covered this also in certain situations.

These now appear to be replaced by a single grant that covers all. But the applicants basically have to be either pensioners or disabled/partially disabled to avail of them. The disability aspect appears to moderately applied insofar as people with high blood pressure etc may qualify in certain instances.

    Talk to your local council.

Also, it seems to be the trend with the LA's down here that they prefer to see septic tanks and percolation areas being installed in new builds instead of the more expensive and electronicky treatment plants.

Seems they realised that the maintenance agreements the manufacturers/installers sign isnt worth the paper that flows through the system.

Might be worth looking at fitting a new percolation area in lieu of a new tank. A good engineer that specialises in this area would be better able to advise

Thanks for the advise guys, much appreciated, I am in louth and the local council in Dundalk when i rang up just said "no theres not" and hung up so i just thought see must have cramps or something and then remembered that i read something on here about it.

I know the reason they want you to go for the septic tank and perc area with new builds is i was told by a mate that under european law these have to be emptied and inspected every year and i heard the local authority will be doing this at a charge so something new of our authorities it may be a case of thinking ahead.

my parents system is shot, and the perc does not work, but i was thinking of just sticking in a tank and renew the whole garden 1/2 acre as perc area as a DIY job. oh by the way the tank is cracked and leaks and there is a well near by we have tapped to the neighbour,s field for wtaer for the last few weeks but i want to sort it quick!
