external hard drive not working on new mac

Hi, My newly purchased Macbook Pro won't pick up my external hard drive at all at all, it doesn't even give me a message to say it doesn't like it. The hard drive has been formatted for both Mac and PC and still works on both, just not on my machine. What am I missing here? Thanks :confused:
