Wash it off with some hot soapy water.

Are you talking about smudges of tar or did it damage your paint?

A good polish and a wax will get rid of the smudges. Thought I'd damaged the paint on my own car when I used petrol for some stubborn tar, but as good as ever after waxing it.

Petrol itself shouldnt do too much damage over a short period and any residue should be removed with standard washing. Be sure to apply a protective coat (wax/polish) as you will have removed any such protection with the petrol. Having said that, I wouldn't put petrol near my paint.

However if you used a rough cloth with any kind of pressure then you have almost certainly damaged the finish. That may require machine restoration or simple Megs paint cleaner to restore.

I've used petrol for years on many cars and many paintworks and it's never, ever done anything bar removing tar!

You've never had the car more than a week though :pac:

I had my last Golf three years and when I sold it the paintwork was like that of a new car!

I can guarantee you that if you have freshly prepared paint and put petrol near it, it will dull it almost straight away.

If you go to a car that belongs to some one who is a bit careless with a petrol pump (my father for example) and run dribbles of water down the side of the car, you can see where the water behaves differently below the petrol cap.

If your paint is already oxidised or not in particularly good condition you probably won't notice the damage it's doing.

My paint was in absolutely perfectly condition on my Golf, I machined polished with a kestrel polisher and maintained it with proper wax and polish. I always used petrol and it never ever did any damage to the car.

Just painted, literally, maybe, but for everything else it's perfect.

Used soap and hot water did not work. Used car polish and car it is like new from the showroom.

I used to try every possible thing to remove tar. They all sucked.
The only thing I found to remove tar efficiently was white spirit. And it's less severe than most other things.

you didn't put in enough elbow grease my friend, all you done was spread the tar out over a wider area, keep working it until it rubs clear, also use two cloths, one for the rough work and one for the finishing off.

Nothing better than petrol for removing Tar, using it for years. All so called detailing creams, liquids are all petro chemical based. waste of money!
