Cleaning up Mac using time machine

    Will this work?

    I have a Mac running os X 10.6.8 , 150gb hd.

I just bought a 1TB external HD, formatted it for mac, partitioned it into 3 parts to back up using Time Machine.

My hard drive is routinely 90% full (I know, should only be 80%), but the thing is I don't seem to have that much on it that I can find. 40 gb of music, no movies - quite a few apps but nothing so serious. I can account for maybe 100GB of the space but not the rest, so I'm thinking, I back it all up, and then...

If I restore my mac to factory setting, install snow leopard, and then...

can I restore just the apps and folders that I want, I'm thinking this will give the whole mac a good clean up.

    Will this work?

    Thanks in advance.
