IPhone 4 3G Reception

I don't know if this is an Iphone issue or an issue with Three but does anyone else have the issue where when 3G reception is lost, it takes an eternity to get it back, even through I'm in areas where there definitely is 3G coverage.

Basically, my car is parked in a basement where there is no 3G coverage so when I go down there I lose the coverage and I get either the o or the E symbol in the status bar. It will stay on whichever one of these it goes on for at least 15 minutes after I leave the basement, even though I am going through areas where there definitely is 3G coverage as I have there the rest of the time.

It won't auto switch back if there's an open data connection, quickest way to jump it back it a quick flick of the airplane mode switch in settings.

I've tried that and that doesn't work unfortunately.

I found that the only way to get around this is to set the carrier to 3G rather than Auotmatic or 3. The only problem though is that this means you constantly get the network dropping. Now though you always get 3G back when you hut airplane mode if in a 3G area.

Bottom line is that I've just given up and accepted that 3 is awful for 3G on the iPhone.

Jack, Both me and my wife have 2 different types of iphone on 3. We used to have this problem until someone FINALLY worked out what to do. You have to manually select the 3 network (3G) THEN click automatic...This worked up until about 3 weeks ago but the problems are back...grrrrrr!!!! Have posted about it in the Three company thread, lets see can they come back with anything. One thing, it's not, repeat not, anything to do with the phone. Do not let them try and mend it...Apple's should only be opened by qualified people as a last resort. And three have a terrible reputation for blaming everything but themselves so when the polite people at customer service even suggest it...

Have you updated to 4.3.5, that's after making a big difference for me. It's on 3G most of the time now.

    Yep, it's not that...

I went and rang 3's customer care about it and was told a solution. Basically she got me to reset the network settings. While it worked alright, it causes the phone to reboot and it loses all the wifi passwords you've set up so you have to re-enter them the next time you go into that area (which is an even bigger pain that I don't want to be doing every day)

No matter what three tell you it's not the handset!

It's a major fault on the network and many people have been released from contracts because of this including myself, they know it's a problem but won't/can't fix it.

When using the iphone on three I spent half the time in the carrier settings having to set the 3G manually even though it was ALWAYS available.

There's loads of threads in the 3 forum with some as far back as august 2010 and nothing has been done about it
