Warm or Cold Roof

    HI,

We are about to start our roof, and we have 2 rooms with vaulted ceilings. We wish to use the best roof for our build, and we are unsure whether the traditional cold roof is the way for us or the newer warm roof. We have been advised that the warm roof will cost more in labour and material but if I thought it was the better roof then we could manage to cut costs on our finishes instead.

We would be aiming for the same uvalue regardless of roof buildup and also will be applying an airtight membrame as we will be installing a HRV system.

Basically, in lay mans terms would we be colder in a room with a cold roof or if it is insulated to same uvalue as the warm roof would it still be ok.

Please help with any advice, as my head is starting to melt with this, and we need to decide asap.

    thanks

    BG

Ignoring technology, imho, a warm roof is a better roof system. Quite apart from anything else, you have a 'warm' void for services, your HRV, and your pipes can never freeze. In an ideal world, if you think about it, insurance co's should give you a discount for it, in light of the last two winter's......

Now, how you build it, that's a different thing.

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
