Dell Dimension E520 Boot Problem

Hi, my Dell Dimension E520 wouldn't turn on this morning and I'm not too sure what the problem. I would be fairly familiar with solving PC software issues but hardware problem is another thing. The PC sounds like it is going to boot but nothing happens and it restarts. The screen remains blank but I can hear the fans and hard drive kick in but then stops and restarts after a couple of seconds. The light on the front of the PC remains amber during this process. Any ideas or what is my best way to troubleshoot? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Duckysauce, had a feeling it was the power supply. I'm getting lend of one off someone with the same PC so I can confirm it. Cheers for the help.

Changed the power supply and the problem remains. Any other ideas? Could it be the motherboard?

I had a problem with a similar machine recently, that turned out to be the mobo.

There are reported issues with the usb / power board at the front.

Unplug from the wall, pop out the CMOS battery. Plug the machine back in again (without the battery) and try it again.

When I was researching it some people found their usb ports at the front had bent pins that was causing a short.

Some people turned on the machine with the side panel off, when the amber light is on disconnect the ribbon cable that connects the board to the motherboard. If it comes on that board may have to be replaced.

Obviously that should only be attempted if you are competent with working with electronics, I assume you are since you switched the power supply.

Cheers for that Hearny, had a problem before with bent pins in one of the USB ports on the front. I'll try what you suggested and let you know how I get on. I also have access to a motherboard so I will try and test it with the different motherboard and see if I can pinpoint the problem.

I replaced the motherboard from a similar PC and it started up fine again. Looking into getting a replacement motherboard and it's going to cost me about £166 from Upgrade Options in the UK. Anywhere I could get one for cheaper or is that the best I can do?
