    Hi guys,

    An expat here.

Basically new job has meant that I must get a car. Job is a 112 mile round trip on UK motorway. Breaks my heart as I dont have the funds. Only have £1500 budget and have come across this:

    http://www.avenuerdcars.co.uk/used-cars/saab-9-3-2-2-tid-se-5dr-birminghm-201127401169138

Going to have a look Saturday.

Never owned a Saab (last 2 cars have been diesel BMW 3 Series). Dont own a car now.

Any thoughts? What should I look out for? Am I wasting my time?

    Cheers, guys.:)

That 2.2 is a renault unit as far as I remember, fairly hungry!

    This would do the trick

    Cheers.

But lack of transport means and I am in a but of a hurry means I am pretty much confined to the Birmingham area. MPG is very very important to me but it's going to be hard to avoid buying a money pit at this level..:(

You could do far worse than this, and it would be hitting 55mpg

No the 2.2 is opel/gm unit, and it is the most troublesome engine Saab have ever used, don't buy unless you a few extra pound for up keep (turbos, intercooler splitting, egr valves, solenoids, injector seals, leak back pipes, hard start problems, lack of power etc)- all these faults I see regularly

    Interesting...

By all accounts the Saab will get 37-38 urban and 47-50 ex-urban. I have 50 miles of hard motorway each way and 12miles of A roads. Of course it's ad ass 68 litre tank at £1.35 a litre plus I can just imagaine all the things that will start to go wrong once I leave the forecourt..

One of the main attractions with the Saab is that there seems to be some 6-12 month warranty available (at a cost no doubt). It is NCT'd for 12 months. Tax is out but not too bad at £164.

In terms of reliability, yes. Its a tried and tested diesel block, without a turbo.. How could it not be reliable! On the negative, it will be EXTREMELY slow, almost to the point that it may be a better decision, in terms of economy, to go for a 1.9 TDi instead, which will at least give you some bit of power

Yes, I was just looking at the spec (bhp and torque) not good at all...:(...****e to be honest but mpg and reliability cant go wrong. Cant have everything I guess.

The Tdi is out of my budget.....bloody hell...68bhp cant be right!!

Be carefull there, All depends on the type of warranty your getting. an engine and gearbox warranty is worth F*ck all. It's the all other stuff thats connect to the engine that gives trouble, injectors, injector pumps, electrics, turbo system, cats, not to mention faults from the within the cabin, window regs, switch gear, the list goes on. Trust me, I used to sell them, Saab were great for workshop business.

What you need is a Rover 45 2l diesel.

A miser on fuel, reliable, comfortable and cheap as chips. Where are you located as I have a friend in the trade over there.

    Thanks guys.

Gone off the Saab...I am reluctantly looking at Ford TDs now...and I hate Fords with a passion......not sure why to be honest...maybe because all my teachers in school drove them and they are driven by boring people...but anyway beggers cant be choosey.

This car is only a few miles from me...will check it out and make an offer of £1400 with £1500 being the absolute max if it checks out. Souds very good. Will swallow pride and go for the Skoda.

Ordinarily I'd agree Bazz but the 45 is cheaper, simpler and more reliable.

The clutch can give serious bills in the ZT when it goes.

I think OP wants something cheap, economical and reliable. If he can get over the badge he will get a nice car

The sdi Skoda may be too slow for safe use on UK motorways.
Switching lanes may become a distraction rather than a swift manoeuvre.

Well after much searching have gone for this car.

    http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201128401982030/sort/priceasc/usedcars/model/elantra/make/hyundai/page/1/postcode/b757er/quicksearch/true/radius/10?logcode=p

Never heard of it TBH but it was got good reviews. Went to see it last night. It is in immaculate condition. They only got it in last week from an elderly chap with FSH and its being MOTd today and they will give me 6 mts tax. Taking it for a test drive tonight and all going well will buy tommorrow.

The Skoda was gone and actually put a bid on ebay for a 2004 Citreon C5 but withdrew it after reading all the terrible reviews online.

Looks fine, but I never like to see a towbar on a car.

There's nothing wrong with a towbar on a car. It does'nt mean its be towing 24/7 FFS!
