Trying to decide what to do at the moment. 2004 Alfa 156 diesel with 68,000 miles (genuine too :D)

Turbo has blown in it(thats what I get for letting the little missus drive it :) ) so have been quoted just short of €1500 incl labour.

Would you repair it or scrap it? Leaning towards repair given the low mileage and good nick the car is in then sell for about €6000 what are peoples opinions? (Alfa bashing thread that way

    Hi,
First of all, if you like the car, it is worth reparing! Is it a 1.9 or a 2.4? because I find the price of the repair a bit high

it's a 1.9 priced €650 for new turbo and then labour

Seems okish for a new tubro, all you can do is price around on the labour.

    Defo not worth scrapping though!

Not worth 6,000 grand either though? I'd imagine

Would you be handy enough to replace the turbo yourself? If so, then its definitely worth doing.

Word to the wise. Be sure you change the oil in the car, and use the correct oil for the engine type. Wrong type of oil will cause the turbo to fail. I know of it happening to a 07 Suzuki Gran Vitara 1.9 TD. Turbo was 500 + VAT. It failed because of the wrong oil and the sump had to come off and the filter on the lift pipe needed to be cleaned too.

Am only going by CBG prices as a rough guide, mines got lower mileage than most of those CBG cars and its diesel too and there aint many diesel 156s knocking around the country.

Cheers, dont think I'd wanna risk changing the turbo myself to be honest. Labours pricey as bumpers to come off to get at the hoses to clean them out of all the oil that went in when it failed apparently.
