    hi all.
Some friends are in the very early planning (thinking?) stage of doing a descent of the Shannon from end to end (thinking top of Logh Allen to Loop Head). Also thinking of doing it in March of 2012, and collecting a few quid for charity. Our angle will be that we are going to try to do it in record time, and in a canadian canoe. The record stands (I think) at under 4 days, but that was in kayak, so whatever speed we do it in a canadian should be a record.

So thats the background. What I am looking for is info. Particularly the name of any canoe / kayak club on the Shannon. I checked out the canoe.ie sitem, and cant seem to get any lists of clubs. We want to co-ordinate with clubs, and maybe time things so that we can do a few miles with them as we go down. This will also promote our cause. Also, I want to check to make sure that they dont have an enent planned for that day.

Aslo, if you have any thoughts on how we can do this, or what we should watch out for , please let me know .....

thx for the interest guys .....
not much progress on my end. Looks like March is a bit ambitious! We still plan to do it, but I think we need to get (boat) fit first. Maybe some good sessions in spring & summer and then do it in Aug / Sept. Or maybe aim for paddys day 2013.

Laziarus, I will check out that site. Thx v much :-)

    hey there.
my brother and i kayaked the barrow river last august 2012 for charity.
we plus a couple of more are looking to do another trip in 2013 on a stretch of the shannon, also for charity.
so were also looking for any info, best stretch to do with the least amount of wiers/locks as possible as were both not very experienced with the wiers and really dont want to be dragging the kayaks out every 5 miles or less at every lock.
rideronthestorm if you are planning on doing the trip, maybe we could all meet up for a couple of days and do a stretch together ?
if not then i hope your trip goes well.
any info would be very much appreciated and thanks in advance for any info/advice given.

I would imagine march and the unpredictable weather would add to the efforts in such a long trip. Also Irish waterways (I can't think of their proper name off hand) have guides for boats on the Shannon and are a very good source of information. Both navigation and otherwise.

Keep us updated with your progress
