Hi All. i am trying to figure out this Saorview/Freesat/free to air stuff.
Looked at all the webs sites and still confused

Ok I got a full Free to Air Satellite System Installed about 3 years ago, to 6 rooms.

I got the following installed by the satellite company

1 x Standard House Aerial (For the Irish Channels)
1 x Satellite Dish (for the Free to air)
    6 x Technomate TM3100D receivers

One of the boxes has started giving a black and white picture for some reason so need to get it serviced. And some boxes only have some of the channels while others have loads of channels. And i want to get 1 extra tv point too maybe to bring it up to 7

So do I have this Saorview system or must i get rid of these Technomates and get Saorview receivers? If i dont have Saorview with this system is it worth upgrading at the moment?
    Im in Dublin.:)

    Any one enlighten me?:)

1 x Standard House Aerial (For the Irish Channels)

If you wish to receive Saorview which is Digital terrestrial television you need to have a recent TV with a built in receiver or a set top box to do the job.

Saorview is not satellite and contains only Irish channels. So you only need to ask yourself one question for now.
Is my picture/sound good enough and do I really need to splash out to watch a couple of minor additional channels
like RTE+1 or News Now and have HD (do you have a HD tv?)

Looking on Ebay and looks like to Get Saorview you need the special Box that answers that question.

    On Ebay i found this
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Triax-TR112-HD-Saorview-Box-USB-PVR-HD-Lead-/190529732878?pt=UK_ConEle_SatCableFreeview_RL&hash=item2c5c75010e#ht_1289wt_754

Can it pick up all the other free to air channels i also have as well?

So basically SAORVIEW is Free to Air and the 4 Irish channels on 1 box with high quality?....

    RTE ONE
    RTE ONE+1
    RTE 2 HD
    TV3
    TG4
    RTE Rolling News
    3e
    RTE Jnr

Cheers Mike :)so basically so am i right in saying

SAORVIEW is Free to Air (same as i have now 100 odd channels) and the 4/5 Irish channels on 1 box with high quality Digital signal ?. The point of it is just to digitise the Irish Channels. So if I dont get a Saorview box shortly when the signal is switched off i will lose my Irish Channels but still have the satellite channels i currently have.

My RTE RTE2 and TV3 signal is perfect. Just a pain having to use the AV channel then to hop to the Satellite lol. I thought Saorview was Like UPC and had all the channels (free to air & rte etc on the 1 box :)
Ok that makes sense now cheers mate

No, Saorview is just the Irish channels, and is broadcast over the terrestrial airwaves, it has nothing to do with the satellite channels, and a Saorview box cannot receive them.

You should be ok for now, but when the analogue signal for RTE1 and 2and tv3and tg4 gets switched off you will lose those channels, but if your televisions are recent models they are likely to be capable of receiving and decoding the new digital signal. My own tv is not capable, I can hear the sound but get no picture:( so I need a set top box. You will need a set top box for each tv that is not compatible. Your satellite channels will not be affected at all.

Hope you dont mind me hijacking your thread, but this Saorview has me confused too.

Ok, so, my parents currently receive RTE/TV3 through their years old aerial on the roof.

They also have my old Sky dish and sky box on which they get the free UK channels.

So, am i right in assuming that when the RTE analogue signal is turned off next year, they will either have to buy a Saorview box or a Saorview ready TV to receive RTE?

And they should pick that signal up fine with the current aerial they have on the roof?

But they will still need the old Sky stuff to get the UK channels?

And for myself, i have a Sky sub, so thats grand, but im thinking about getting a tv/dvd combo for the bedroom, (makes sense to buy a saorview ready one of course), just for free channels, but we have no aerial on the roof at all, so to get RTE we will need to put up an aerial?
And to get any free UK channels we will need to get some sort of a satellite box? Can we hook up any old box to the current Sky dish(we have a quad lnb on it i think) or does it need to be a sky box?
Is there such a thing as a combi system that can pick up Saorview and the free UK channels?

Probably really dumb questions i know, i used to be so good with all this techie stuff, god be with the days i was the only girl in the house who could tune in the vcr, and my parents still call me anytime the channels go....i need to keep up to date!!!!

If they currently receive analogue TV3 thru the existing aerial they should have no problem receiving the Saorview channels. If their existing TV isn't compatible a new Saorview TV or STB will be required.

The UK channels aren't carried on Saorview so the existing dish and receiver will continue to be required.

An aerial is always required for Saorview.

Any free to air or freesat satellite receiver connected to the Sky dish will pick up the UK channels.

There are combi receivers available e.g. this, do a search for combi here in the forum.
