R4i Card noob please help..

    have a DSi in the post i bought from ebay.. and ordered this r4i package its also in the post...im wondering can i upgrade the dsi to its latest firmware and still have this card working?..cos i saw alot about people upgrading then the card wont work no more...i hope someone can help

    p.s whats the memory stick thingy in the picture for?..
