I think the owners manual for the same TDI in my Passat said about 80k miles but you'll have to wait until tomorrow as I'm in beer now.

I'm open to correction on that though

it's expensive, but I changed it in my passat and it was definately improved. And that was at only 40K or something on a '03.
    What mileage you at?

I just bought 2L of gearbox oil 80w75 (I think) for 10euro. You might need a different spec though.

You don't have to do it at all, however personally I get it done with the timing belt every 60,000 miles.

Varies widely - wife's Mazda is like 100k km. My Lexus needs its diff oil changed every 30k km!

there is nothing about it in the owners manual or service manual for the car. it gives the period for the haldex oil and filter (if fitted) but nothing about gearbox oil

I know in my car, hyundai crdi, they say the manual gearbox oil should never need changing, even the hyanes manual says no point in doing it unless the car is used in 'rough service'.

Saying that it doesn't mean i'm not going to do it, i'm near 100k miles now might be no harm, got a quote from an indy for €60 to do it, which reminds me actually!
