I already mentioned this in the main thread, but just a warning to anyone who streams media from their Mac to a media centre device: make sure it's compatible with Lion. In fact, if you do any sort of Windows file sharing make sure it will still work under Lion. Apple have changed OS X's SMB implementation in 10.7. As I understand it, they've replaced Samba with their own version called SMBX, which supports SMB2 but not SMB1.

    Cheers for the heads up.

Oh crap, I stream everything to Plex on my Mac Mini from a v1 Windows Home Server box which I think is SMB 1... Thanks for the heads up Sad Professor, I'll install Lion on my MacBook first and try it all out before touching the Mini...

I've found a possible workaround for this. Yazsoft sells a shareware application called Playback which uses UPnP rather SMB and is apparently compatible with a whole bunch of media centre devices, including the WDTV, PS3, Plex and XBMC. I'm not sure how well it works and whether it works with Lion though.

EDIT: scratch that, Playback doesn't support external subtitles. They have to be embedded. Useless!

Disappointing news. I stream music via SMB. This has seriously put me off upgrading the iMac to Lion. Hopefully XBMC has a fix soon.

Anyone who doesn't do just do mundane stuff with their computers, like web browsing, and particularly, those who depend on any specific piece of software and/or hardware, should never be early adopters of new OSes, or new versions of any software that's "mission critical" to them. Let someone else screw their systems up discovering when/if things don't work.

    Just my 2c of course.

Feck it, I'm thinking of upgrading and using Playback or EyeConnect to stream files via UPnP. It doesn't support subtitles, but I can mux them into the file using mkvmerge if necessary. It'll do until until there's some solution for SMB.

I was already aware of the MacPorts method, but life is too short. There's a reason I use a Mac and not Linux. :D But maybe someone will come up with an easier and more reliable way of installing Samba.

I use Playback and it's great, steam from mac mini to my apple tv's. Haven't upgraded to lion yet so can't say for sure if it works.

I am an idiot and upgraded to lion the day it arrived. I had been using smb and xbmc on my atv2. Was working great !
After upgrade xmbc was not working. I have then installed playback and it does work. Not as well but it is a temp fix that DOES work. Playback on osx lion does work with xbmc.

Old thread, but I finally found an easy fix for this. An app called SMBUp which downloads SAMBA and manages it for you. Pretty easy to use.

One of the main reasons I never upgraded to Lion as I use bot Plex and XBMC.
Glad there is a solution now but I`m probably better off holding on til Mountain Lion comes out, which I presume this will work with too?

Sad Professor sent me here and SMBup doesn't fix my issue, namely I use my mini as a media player and can't mount a samba share from my satellite box.

If anyone else is having this issue, the solution could be as simple as typing this into terminal:

    sudo sysctl -w net.smb.fs.kern_deprecatePreXPServers=0

Need's to be added to a shell script to run on startup but I suddenly have access to what I need.

    The command comes from here:

Strange that it didn't work for you.

Are you saying that Terminal command with work without SMBUp?

I'm saying SMBup didn't allow me to mount the drive in my sat box from my Lion box from "Connect to Server" in Finder. I use the Mac as a Samba client, not a server.

The terminal command enables client support for legacy devices.

Ah, I get you now. I just use my Mac as a server.

The plan is to add the sat box to Plex and use that to serve everything (mini has a PCI-E eSATA card and a 4 bay DAS BOX full of media). My Raspberry Pi arrived last week and that's got PlexBMC running on RaspMC which will go into service once I get my shiny new LED TV for the bedroom.
