    Hi everyone,

I am in the process of buying a new used car.

I am looking to spend in the region of 6000 - 9000.

At the minute I am swaying towards the Nissan Primera 2007/2008, 1.6 petrol.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated, as I am not very knowledgeable about cars. Is economic with fuel etc? Or is there better cars for that type of money?

Best thing is to start off by telling us what you want the car for, what you need it to be able to do, what kind of driving you do, mileage per annum etc. The more detail you give, the more people can help.

    Thanks for the reply's

ok so basically I have been driving a '99 DAEWOO LANUS and I need a change and upgrade!

I do an 80km round trip to work, 3 days a week. Other than that it is just tipping around locally. I suppose I would put up 15000 - 20000 km a year.

I have been told for my budget its probably not worth buying a diesel, for the miles I will be doing?

I intend keeping the car for approx 4 years so low mileage is important.

The primera just stood out as a decent car for the price I was looking at

Then an S40 or a Passat would be the best choice.
There is a huge difference in buying a diesel and petrol.

    Diesel: €1.40
    Petrol: €1.50

    Diesel Avg: 6L/100KM
    Petrol Avg: 8.5L/100KM

If the tank is 50 litres, you have diesel for 833km.
If the tank is still 50 litres you have petrol for only 588km.

The cost of 1km in diesel = 8 cents
The cost of 1km in petrol = 12 cents

    15000KM a year in diesel = €1200
    15000KM a year in a petrol car = €1800

In 4 years, you'll save €2400 if you buy a diesel.

    Sobanek,

Thanks for the calculation, I guessed it would be in that region but hasn't done my maths.

I will have a look at the the cars you suggested.

My problem is that, for my budget (6,000-9,000), any diesel car I look at had very high mileage 100,00+, and I'm wondering if the savings I make on the fuel will just be pumped into the servicing and maintenance of a high mileage diesel car.

Is there known problems with the Nissan primera or is it an option if I was to stick with a petrol engine?

I wouldn't buy a japanese diesel but this is just my opinion.

01-05 TDI Passats are very reliable cars. I've a friend mechanic who owned one for 7 years now - 442k km on the dash - no headgasket problems, maintenanced properly, oil changed on regular basis and it runs like a dream. He never had any problems. The original 2002 turbo still works.

You can get a lot of car for this money. If you want something newish you could do a lot worse than an 08 focus which will be easy enough to sell on or for something bigger an 07/8 new model mondeo will go forever and thier is plenty about. Another option would be an 06 audi a3 which would also hold its value better than most at that age.
Diesel may also be easier to sell on in 4 years time. Modern ford vw skoda audi bmw diesels go on forever. For something a bit different you could try an 03 bmw 330d

dont think the interior quality is up to european or japanese cars and might be hard to sell on. good choice if he wants something different though

lovely looking car but what about reliability.would love one myself but could you trust it

10 People I know have the 159 with the 1.9 diesel. Cost of repairs sucks but the stereotype of them being unreliable certainly doesn't apply to this one.
