Slow drivers causing accidents.

I know it's a UK report but has relevance for Ireland too.

Slow drivers are one of the biggest dangers on the road and should be treated like speeders, a report says today.

Nearly a third of motorists have had a 'near miss' caused by someone travelling slowly.

These drivers create such frustration that six out of ten motorists feel stress rise and about half are tempted to 'undertake'.

It has led to calls for a crackdown on slow drivers including the setting of minimum limits or even ‘slow speed’ cameras.

Transport Department figures show 143 accidents a year are caused directly by slow drivers.

The report from insurer Confused.com coincides with the Government’s deadline today for police and councils to publish prosecution and casualty data on speed cameras to see if they do save lives or just raise cash.

The report notes: ’In reaction to these slow drivers, almost half (45%) of motorists risk overtaking, thus increasing the chances of an accident.

'Although minimum speed limits are enforced on some UK motorways, there are few preventative measures that are used widely.'

In 2011 the government introduced a scheme which allows for £100 on-the-spot fine for careless driving-including those that drive too slow, though there is little evidence of this being taken seriously by the authorities.

More than a quarter (27 per cent) of drivers questioned want an explicit ‘ slow lane’ on roads to combat slow drivers.

Hot-spots for low middle lane hogs include the main A3 road between Surrey and Hampshire and the capital.

Nothing annoys me more than someone driving in the middle of the road at snails pace oblivious to the growing line of traffic behind them.
Just this evening I got stuck behind a woman in a 4x4 crawling along at 40kph and seemed to have trouble with the basics of driving,I could feel myself getting angrier with each second I was stuck basically freewheeling behind her.

Yes, it's annoying, but slow drivers don't cause accidents. People overtaking recklessly cause accidents. You might as well blame Henry Ford for causing accidents.

No doubt about it, slow drivers and people who either don't know or are just incapable of staying in the left lane except when overtaking are major annoyances.

Equally, there is no doubt that the RSA will do SFA about this, because all they are obsessed with is telling people to "slow down", though we are never told how much to slow down by, sure I even heard an add yesterday saying about how one little thing can make such a difference towards saving lives, this one little thing being that we drive even slower:mad:!

If we drive any bloody slower we might as well go walking, honestly people are driving exceptionally slowly anytime they come across a speed camera sign, at least 20% below what the limit is supposed to be! People talk about 120 kph as being some sort of crazy ass speed (even though the said roads where it is legal to do 120 kph are the safest in the county by a mile) but it's not fast at all on a decent road!

I wish all the slowcoaches would shag off the roads and leave those of us who have a life get on with ours! Rant over!

They are more than just an annoyance. Are people supposed to just cruise behind the imbeciles at a snails pace?. They are a hazard. If they are not competent enough to move with the flow of traffic then they should stay at home.
