    Hi there,

I've been having problems with a laptop recently, thought it was virus related and backed up data and formated the drive in a caddy and put it back in. I then partitioned it and went to install Windows XP again but it keeps hanging (at different stages though) and i have got a blue screen on two occasions with the message "driver_irql_not_less_or_equal"

Any ideas what is causing this?

Quick search states that it could be a memory issue.

Yeah, i have reseated the RAM etc. and it doesn't seem to be that, or at least i can load up an OS from Hirens CD etc. and theres no issue. I wont rule it out though.

Can run this cos i dont have an OS installed, i formatted the disk so cant run it. Getting the blue screen during the install of Windows (when it hangs). Looks like it might be good though.

    0x000000D1: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

The system attempted to access pageable memory using a kernel process IRQL that was too high. The most typical cause is a bad device driver (one that uses improper addresses). It can also be caused by caused by faulty or mismatched RAM, or a damaged pagefile.

Definitely looks like RAM cause. What problems were you having before re-install?

Check that the voltages are correct in the BIOS, I had this problem with my first build and setting the correct voltages corrected it.

It was crawling, really slow ... 2.2 Ghz + 4 gig RAM ... thought it was virus/spyware but did everything to rule it out.

What gets me though is that the same RAM has been installed for years and its been fine. I have taken it out and reseated it but its back in perfectly. I just have a feeling its something else.

Sorry, it seems I missed the part where you stated it was a laptop in the OP, laptops typically don't have options for voltages in the BIOS, sorry.

I can only think of it being faulty RAM at this point.
