Power supply for 3.5" HD when using Sata to eSata cable

I need to retrieve something from my desktop HD. The motherboard died last week.

I'm hoping to use a Sata to eSata cable like this to connect the 3.5" HD to my laptop's eSata port.

Can I then just leave the HD connected to my desktop PSU to power it?

It's a short term solution as I'll need some stuff off this by the weekend and don't know anyone who could throw the HD in a desktop before then, and I definitely won't have replaced the motherboard by then!
