This went under the radar last week given the Cloyne report being released. Havent seen it much in the papers. Its gonna hit homes really hard this year

Summary of Changes to Smokeless Fuel Allowance, Electricity Allowance, Gas Allowance and the Telephone Allowance from September 2011

    Smokeless Fuel Allowance

The Smokeless Fuel Allowance will be abolished from September 2011. Smokeless Fuel Allowance was paid to customers in towns where the sale of bituminous fuel is banned. The Smokeless Allowance was introduced at a time when many more people used coal and there was a big price difference between the types of coal. This situation has changed with the price differential between smoky and smokeless coal dropping considerably over the years and is now as low as 2%, significantly less than the 20% supplement which the Smokeless Allowance represents. Smokeless fuel is also much more energy efficient than conventional coal.
The allowance was paid for 32 weeks each year during the winter months at the weekly rate of €3.90. The abolition of this allowance has no impact on the National Fuel Scheme. Customers will continue to be paid €20 per week under the National Fuel Scheme for 32 weeks commencing in September 2011.
    Electricity Allowance

The annual value of the Electricity Allowance will be adjusted from 2,400 units to 1,800 units effective from September 2011. The adjustment will be applied automatically to customers’ bills where the allowance is credited directly to their supplier. Those customers paid a monthly cash payment will have their rate adjusted to €35.80 per month from Tuesday 6th September 2011.
    Gas Allowance

The annual value of the Gas Allowance will be adjusted from €489 to €393 effective from September 2011. The adjustment will be applied automatically to customers’ bills where the allowance is credited directly to their supplier. Those customers paid a monthly cash payment will have their rate adjusted to €32.70 per month from September 2011.
    Telephone Allowance

The annual value of the Telephone Allowance will be adjusted from €311 to €267 effective from September 2011. The adjustment will be applied automatically to customers’ bills where the allowance is credited directly to their telephone service provider. Those customers paid a monthly cash payment will have their rate adjusted to €22.30 from September 2011.

It was heavily covered last week by various media and there are a few threads on boards about it. It's last week's news.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if this came back to bite them in the form of a surge in hospital admittals this winter if it's anything like the previous two winters.
Don't be silly, they plan to close the hospitals before the winter.

works out about a 10% cut to their €1,900 of allowances.
not as bad as it first appears.

There are some remarkably casual comments concerning the energy and phone allowances.

I suggest investigating researched figures, possibly available from charities for the elderly for example.

Of course the powers-that-be will remove the rights of those struggling. The right of big business to coin it is never questioned.

    5. This is not a forum for critiscizing Government Departments or Semi-State Bodies.

5a - 5 includes the policies of the Government Departments of Semi-State Bodies

Taken from the forum charter, please take these into account if you wish to post in this thread.

    Thanks

Who are you talking to here? I think this thread was made to be critical of this policy and was moved to this forum from a different forum with a different charter after posts were made. Unless you're referring specifically to only Mervyn's thread then the modding across the two forums involved is just laughable.
