Pay as You Go Golf Course in Dublin

    Hi

I have been playing Pitch and Putt courses (18 holes) now for the last year and I have grown out of them, I can not afford to pay out a big membership fee to join a golf course so am looking for one around Dublin were I can pay for a round each time I play (I have my own clubs)

It would need to be no more than a 30 min to 40min drive from rathgar Dublin 6. Also I am not that great (hitting round of 70 to 75 in 18 hole Pitch And Putt, with hole from 110 yards to 200 yards) so would any one know of one that would not be that busy as I would not like to hold people up.

Do people also know what would be the best time to play so that the course is quite.

Also does anyone one know of any good places I could go for lessons so I could improve my game.

    Any help would be great

elm green-n3 at castleknock(behind travelodge)-24 euro at weekends
sillouge-just off m50 sliproad at ballymun-25 euro at weekends

Hi Thanks for that had a look at grange castle-m7 at citywest, they have a 7 hole course so might try that out 1st could be a good steping stone to the full 18 course.

Has any one played the 7 hole one do u know the lenght of the holes?

Haven't played the 7 hole but played the front 9 of the 18 hole course a couple of times last year of an evening after work. Think green fees at the time for 9 holes was 16 euro. Nice front 9 and was well impressed with the course set up in general, definitely give it a go.

Grange is a decent course to start on, it's where I kicked off my "career".
I've played the 7 hole course once (regular back 9 were closed) and it was decent, a bit plain by comparison to the rest of the course.

Sillogue is a very easy course for starting on too. Most flat, and wide fairways which are nice and forgiving!

Equally, you could try a few Par 3 courses, just to get used to slightly longer holes. The Burrow and Step-a-Side both have 18 hole courses that are pretty decent in close distance.

Thanks for the help so far one last question, I have to decide on which course I am going to go to, going to play tomorrow after work so should be teeing off at about 6.30.

So it is betwwen grange castle Golf course (http://www.grangecastlegc.com/ ) and play the 7 holes courses be the best or Leopardstown Golf course (http://golf.leopardstown.com/Content/LeopGolf/default.aspx ) and play the 18.

Has anyone played both these courses and if so which would you recommend would be the best for a benniger and which would be quite at this time and do u know if u need to book a tie off time.

I have played both (a few years ago) and would say Leopardstown is definately better for a beginner, while Grange Castle has the nicer and better course (imo) Leopardstown is more forgiving i.e. easier and has more open space for that wayward shot and as such is better for a beginner...

    Hi

Thanks for all your help and from your advice I went out and played the Leopardstown Golf course yesterday evening. It is a great course to start off on I think, nice and open not to many trees about to hit into or many places to loss a ball(even thought I lost two).

The only thing about it is you can easily end up on the wrong fairway if your tee shout does not go straight (which happened me and other people so I did not feel to bad).

So the 1st time on a full sized golf course I have learnt I can not drive the ball off the tee using a driver or even a 3 wood. I think 2 of my drives went were I what it to go. Others went straight up in the air and went about 30 yards (no idea how I was able to do that with a driver)

But my 2nd shouts worked out ok (think from playing pitch and Put for a while helped me on this).

3 putted a few too so need to improve on that.

So I my score (please don’t laugh) I hit 47 in front 9 and 49 in back nine, so total of 96 and the course par is 68, so only 28 over he he. But I am happy enough as I hit some great shouts, got 3 pars, got 2 or 3 lovely putts, did not hit anyone with my ball and did not hold anybody up.

So another beginner question how do I work out my handicap or even better what is the highest I can start off with as I know I will be that.

As how does this point scoring thing work I have heard of some people talk about it, like u get 1 point for a bogey 2 points for par etc. How do u work out how many point u get for each hole etc.

I could be your teeing the ball too high, it could be your stance it could be a number of things to be fair. Its probably an idea to get a few lessons just to help build some good swing fundamentals before you learn to many bad habits :)

Ive been playing on grange castle for a while now, Came from pitch and putt myself, and was shooting underpar in pitch and putt so decided to change it to the big golf :) went out to grange played my first round of golf there, and its great for practice very forgiving course if your good with your long irons, hit a decent tee shot and u will be playing some nice attacking shots to the green(s). some nice par3's there too.
