Career guidance and jobseeking support

I've been working in the international development sector (aid) for the past seven years, both in charities and for a stint on the government side overseas.

I feel hopelessly lost as to what to do next. There are so few jobs in the sector, and ones I'm desparate to do aren't giving me interviews, that I'm resigining myself to the fact that I've 'lost' the game and I should look elsewhere. At the same time, I've given all my working life to this area and have built up knowledge and experience that isn't easy to turn my back on.

The only path I feel I could suceed at is academia, but that's a slog in itself and hopelessly unpredictable.

I feel lost and would appreciate suggestions for where to go or what to do to address this reality and my feelings about it. In the past, I did the 'What Colour is your Parachute?' exercise and got a good job out of it ... overall, I've had a decent enough 'hit rate' with jobs. Now is different. Fás is useless.

    Hi Op,

Just read your thread and unfortunately I dont have anything in the way of guidance for you, but I was wondering if I could be so cheeky as to ask some of you??

International Development is an area I would love to get into and I have been toying with the idea of going back to college and maybe doing the Masters in Trinity on Development Practice. However, I dont have any experience in the field to date and I was wondering what the career prospects would be after it?

My qualifications are in Law both here and NY. I have done a Masters in Law as well, major part of it (including my thesis) was Human Rights Law. Not sure if that would be any help.

Are your complaints with the lack of options based on the domestic job market or internationally as well?
