Transfer VHS to Pc

    Hi i hope this is in the right section,question has probably been asked before but i couldnt find it,

    Basically a friend asked me would i be able to transfer his old videos to his hard drive,i have seen a few suggestions about using a dvd recorder which i might try.Does this work?

    Ive also read about using tv cards,will any owl tv card work and do i need anything else to connect them,if so what and exactly how would i do it.
