Taxation Predicament - Need Help

    Hi,

I've been working on an off for a small company since October. I submit certs to my local SW office stating the days I've worked and haven't worked, receiving a SW payment for the days I haven't worked.

We applied for all my tax details back at the start, but only received them maybe a month ago.

Now it seems my employer's tax liability for me so far is 100% of what I've earned. This seems prepostrous to me - how can that be?

It's been suggested that I register myself as a contractor and look after my own tax from now on, and retro pay my own tax liability to date of ~ 10-20% of what I've earned. My employer has been deducting 10% of my salary as an interim measure, till everything got sorted.

When I took on this work, the mechanism agreed was for me to become an employee of the company, because if I became a sloe-trader and was contracted by my employer, I'd lose any welfare entitlements I'd otherwise be entitled to, and I'd also have to provide my own insurance for work, which would negate the viability of me working.

Where do my tax credits come into play in all this? Prior to getting this work, I'd been out of work for 18 months.

Does any of this make sense to anyone out there? Where would I go to get info on this?

    Thanks

Did you get a certificate of tax credits from Revenue to give to your (part-time) employer? Is the employer using it to calculate the deductions?

At year end your income from employment and social welfare will be combined to work out any balance due or owing to or from Revenue.

Some time ago I was doing the same, a couple of days work each week before i started back fulltime. I had to submit "dockets" to the sw office - which they accepted emails of days worked from employer, and go in on the day after I worked. It depends on who is in the sw office some are more helpful than others, oddly making it difficult for you to do the honest thing.
It also took me some time to get a statement of when i signed off for my employer to payroll me without emergency tax!
