Best Lock for my bike

    Hi all,

Just got myself a Felt Z6 carbon framed bike and want to make sure nobody will stroke it, it cost €1,350.

Mostly it will be kept in garden shed, which so far for 8 years has been safe enough to keep prized tools and old bike.

In work, it will be in a locked yard, but electric gates do give chancers a chance to sneak in, though this is very rare. There is a steel girder which i can lock it to.

Other than that, should be no longer than an hour or so locked round town if i was having lunch or doing a bit of shopping.

The heavier the lock, the more secure it is. But do consider if you will have to carry this weight on your commute to work, or could you leave it locked to the girder in work? Then a lighter one would do for the shop-stops. Although an hour is a long time to leave a bike unattended. In that case, buy the heaviest one you could bear to carry, and afford, of course. ;)

kryptonite mini evo - light and fits in your back pocket, unbreakable as your going to get, and relatively cheap .. about €45 in most dublin bike shops. fits your frame and a standard city sign post so you can lock up practically anywhere

.. there is a reason they are the best selling lock in the world :D

I would not do this. Your bike will stick out a MILE. Lock it well at home and buy a sh!t heap for town.

Or at least a bike that isn't so obviously expensive.

Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit mini-lock is excellent, but you can't get much into it and it weighs over 2kg.

I've a wire or coil lock and a U bolt lock that are both carried on the bike. Neither are heavy, and two different types of lock might slow a thief more than one heavy lock, both Oxford locks. I also take off the saddle and occasionally the front wheel when I have to leave it for a while. I also got a little little Lidl wire lock so three locks now.

Will you fit one ot two wheels into that? Both my wheels are easily removable. Thanks.

As far as I know (I have the similarly sized Fahgettaboudit), you'll get one wheel into it only.

You could use a security skewer on the front, or get a Kryptoflex.

i just heard the new mini evo is a small bit bigger, perhaps enough for 2 wheels and your frame but no longer pocket size. apparently you can still get the smaller locks but only online. i use mine with a kryptonite rope lock for my wheels. its enough to deter 99.9% of petty bike thieves.

I recently had a bike robbed and they must have sliced through my expensive ABUS U-lock with a portable angle grinder.

I can't imagine that any lock could withstand an angle grinder, but sure I might as well ask on this thread.

Is there anything availble that can make life difficult for those angle grinder carrying scobes?

I lock my bike to a gas main. Since the shackle is harder to cut than the pipe, I'm hoping that they'll blow themselves up.

hahaha! I could superglue a canister of gas to the bike frame just near where I lock it and let them take the risk of blowing themselves up.

The canister would be empty, but they wouldn't know that, and the 'flammable' and 'explosive' sticker might put them off. Amusing to think about having this on the bike......
