Garage charges

Right so, long story significantly shortened

Car broke down, gets toed to the garage. I have road side assist on my insurance so this is on the Ins, but i'm only third party so the work is being paid for by me.

A lot of jigs and reels (and 2 and a half weeks) later and the ECU has been taken out and sent to England to be fixed and is now due back tomorrow.

I just wanted to know, when getting a receipt from a garage in this instance (ie. where they didn't do all the work themselves and sent things away) can you ask to see their original receipts as well? ie. the receipt they got for the postage and what they got billed for the work in England and so on.

Personally would feel much happier to see the originals but is it completely out of line to be asking to see this kind of detail?

    Thanks

You could ask to see ... but you'd probably be told to 'Jog On' in more polite speak !!!!

You have agreed to a price (i hope) for work to be done ... where this work was done and the cost to garage is of no relevance to you at this stage.

I'd be suprised if the mechanic / garage wouldn't be putting at least a 20% markup on the refurbished part .. this is due to the fact that they are in business to make money and should anything go wrong with it it will be up to them to sort it out for you.

Ah yeah I have no problem with them making a profit on it, I make a profit on someone else tis the way of the world. It was just that it had dragged on for so long and a general vibe I've been gettin off em every time I phone em up about it.

Yeah we have agreed a price (over the phone, but I have it written down).

Well grand enough, asked and answered. Just wanted to see what the story was with that.

    Nice one

Ask for an itemised list and everything should be there, hopefully.

You won't get to see their subcontractor's invoice. I've never seen that happen.

Just to close off the thread; I didn't bother asking them to see their receipts after reading what y'all wrote.

Got a semi itemised receipt from them for a little less than we had agreed. Would have preferred a more detailed receipt, but there ya go.

Nice one for the advice lads.
