Murdoch's mistake

No serious person doubts Rupert Murdoch's king making and political influence peddling, it has been well documented throughout the years, however Murdoch himself has always claimed that he pulls no strings and it’s up to the editors of his papers and various media interests to make their own calls. This denial doesn't aide Murdoch himself much, but it does offer a level of plausible deniability for the politicians he makes secret deals with.

However Murdoch made an uncharacteristic slip up today during questioning by a British House of Commons committee.

"I was invited within days [of the general election in May last year] to have a cup of tea to be thanked for the support by Mr Cameron.” Rupert Murdoch

Wonder did Tony O'Reilly get a cup of tea off Bertie?
Eoghan Harris got a senate seat.

This is, in a way true. He hires people who know exactly what he wants in the papers so he never needs to intervene himself. Robert Fisk has a good article on why he left the times, alluding to how Murdoch exerted his influence.
I don't believe Murdoch personally interfered in any of the above events (Editing his middle east reports). He didn't need to. He had turned The Times into a tame, pro-Tory, pro-Israeli paper shorn of all editorial independence. If I hadn't been living in the Middle East, of course, it might have taken me longer to grasp all this.

Sure there's that element. He often just backs whoever is going to win.

In this case however, Cameron hired News Corp man Coulson to be his communications manager and Murdoch's papers immediately took a pro-Cameron position.

Mods: I didn't notice this thread on the almost identical topic. (News International Scandal - Political Implications For David Cameron) Feel free to merge this thread into the other if you so wish.
