Got a call from guy to say car is ready will pick it up tomorrow. He told me they only take cash. Now I know you can buy petrol with a card in this place. Is he trying to do the work off the books and should I ask for a discount if that is the case? Other than a receipt what paper work should I get to say work is done?

    Thanks folks...

He's just trying to make sure he gets paid and he's perfectly entitled to ask for cash only, bit late to ask for a discount but you could try. Your entitled to a receipt.

Was there a problem with the timming belt, or is it being done as part of wear and tear? check he is changing the tensioner pully also. It's all part of the timming belt kit. You don't want him pulling a fast one by only changing the belt.

Paying by cash is fair enough as long as you can confirm the work is done 100%, get a reciept.

...........Now I know you can buy petrol with a card in this place. ............

Service station and the actual garage may well be seperate businesses. many many garages don't have credit card facilities, service stations though.

sorry if i'm reading your post incorrectly but are you saying he is charging you 185 for the tensioner ?

recently bought a kit containing timing belt, 3 tensioner pulleys, cam (most likely not correct term) belt, and alternator and water pump belts, for €160 all in

You will have the kit for €160, but you wont have it fitted to the engine for anything like that. But the tensioner should of been fitted along with the belt as part of the job anyway. A belt on its own is probably only €20 or €30.

The cam belt is the timing belt.
