Antenna for broadband ???

Because of our location we were limited in our choice of broadband providers and signed up with 3. The signal in our home is poor to say the least and is often unusable. (50 m up the road the reception is fine) 3 supplied us with a "repeater" but it makes zero difference.

Using their customer support-a call centre in India- is frustrating. It's mostly down to my bad hearing to be fair.

Is there anything we can get - e.g. an outside antenna - to improve the reception? I've been doing some googling but getting nowhere fast.

Any pointers (in simple layman's speak :o) would be much appreciated

it helps if you know in what direction the mast you are getting reception off is! the little white box off the repeater has to be pointing in that direction! which means if your back room is the room looking out towards the mast, thats where it should go! if you don't want to use your internet in that room, no worries, you can get a wifi dongle off 3 and put that beside the repeater, turn it on with the repeater and your house then has wifi! as long as your laptop/desktop has wifi your laughing. now since your posting this in the midlands section, and i'm in longford, Ardagh serves most of this county if that helps! Pm me your general area and i'll let you know where your local mast is! has this info at http://www.askcomreg.ie/mobile/siteviewer.273.LE.asp now it can be a bit tricky to use so if i can help any more just ask!

Another Midband thread that will probably be POINTLESSLY moved to the PM the 3 Rep forum

But in reply to the OP the only solution might be to get the best signal where the best signal can be found 50m up the road and place a router at that location and then connect to the router via WiFi. Or at 50m you could use a suitable Power of Ethernet adaptor to get power to the router and connect to it.

I'll try and find the pics I posted of my setup as I use that sort of set up myself.

This was one of my setups its changed a bit but essentially its works the same. If there is no power near where the best signal is available then replace the mains power lead with Power over Ethernet system.

I've heard Mifi is a lot better than dongles. Just saying, I know this probably isn't helpful.

Often the improvement is because the MiFi Unit is far easier to place in a location where there is a good signal. A full blown 3G WiFi Router can give a similar advantage.
