For the average non-gamer user, is there a noticeable difference between them??

I'd say the wear and tear on the 5400 is less since it's spinning slower so it would probably last longer...the 7200 would load up faster but I'm not pushed by that. It's probably just 2/3 seconds anyway.

The 7200 would produce more heat which isin't good in a Laptop, harder on the battery to?

Some comments pop up here every now and then but I haven't seen a thread on HDD speeds so.......opinions Plz?

I suppose if you had plenty of ram and a 5400rpm drive then the difference between the 7200 and 5400 drive becomes less and less.

there really is not a major difference for day to day use i've only noticed a difference of maybe 5 seconds per large transfer on my machine...however using a SSD the difference was huge

Some 5900 RPM drives have a faster sustained transfer rate than older 7200 RPM drives due to higher areal density:

    ST3500630A - 500GB - 7200 RPM - 78MB/s
    ST31500541AS - 1.5TB - 5900 RPM - 95MB/s
