If you look at all the "help me pick a laptop" threads, you'll find many give the target budget of "around 500".

One of the overlords could maybe make a post with the "current best we can find for around €500" and sticky it? That way, we can all carry on finding great bargains, but have the OP edited to include the top picks.

I'm sure it'd be fairly easy to do, and well used. You could split it into 2 groups too... one for people who mostly want to play games and need a good processor, and another for those who'd rather just go for a large laptop with plenty of hard drive. or something like that?

As a sticky, definitely no, there is enough stickys as there is. A "Here's what I bought" thread could work quite well and it'd be interesting to see what everyone has and could generate some discussion. I think maintaining a list of current best buys in laptops would be a nightmare though as it can change every couple of days. Plus different people look for different things. People will rate some aspects as more important than others e.g design, weight, size, battery life, memory, hard drive capacity, performance, connectivity etc.

It could be made a No Discussion thread, people just fire up what they bought and others can have a look before starting their own Thread if want they want isin't in there.

I agree, which is why I picked out the most requested type of laptop ("the best I can get for €500), instead of a more broad and general post.

    The post would basically consist of;

If you want to play games, here's our top 3
    Link
    Link
    Link
Link (This 4th one will get you a graphics card for an extra €150)

If you're just looking for a word processor and occasional internet usage, these 3 will do for closer to €300
    Link
    Link
    Link
Link (This 4th one has the biggest/best screen for an extra €100)

From what I've seen in a month of being here, that's about 70% of the requests on here covered.

But yeah, just throwing it out there. My new laptop is being delivered in about an hour, so it's no difference to me. :P

But the problem with that is that prices can fluctuate quite a bit at times. I've seen dells prices on their site change a couple of times a day in some cases. Plus, if a voucher for a site is released (dell vouchers can be pretty popular) then it may make a previously poor value laptop a bargain. Also, stock levels can vary. A company may slash the price of an older model to get rid of them making it a bargain but a bargain that won't last long. It could be a pain to keep on top of and would be a lot of work to maintain.

That's not even getting into people's personal preference for many different things like colour, weight, design, etc. For example, I'd gladly pay more for a laptop with a good touchpad and keyboard as a laptop with a crap touchpad would wreck my head. Others may not care about that though and just want something cheap as possible.

    P.S. Enjoy your new laptop.

Shooting the breeze on this but, is it possible to have one sticky or "Laptop selector database" that would filter down to a laptop configuration that someone could shop around with?

For example , there are a lot of processors, graphics cards around. I got an Acer aspire 751 with 11.6" screen, thought it great at first but absolutley hate it, live streaming is terrible and it is too slow, so I went back to the core duo HP but am now migrating to the work i5-M540 as it is so fast for net browsing and streaming.

attached excel file of laptop attributes, could a database filter somehow help?

I like this idea. Can we go with it?
