Hand-brake Light Question

I'm a L driver. I'll be doing my test in 3 weeks time. I'll be using my sisters Micra to do the test.

The car has 1 years NCT, but the red handbrake light in the dash doesn't turn off when the handbrake is dis-engaged. It comes on whether the handbrake is up or down. Can I still do the test in the car if the light is always on?

The ( ! ) handbrake light is also a brake system warning light.

I would get this looked at asap. Your brake fluid is probably low.

Really? I just noticed my engine warning light came on yesterday and my test is next week. To get it checked out I will have to bring it to a dealer and have it connected to a computer I think. God knows what that might throw up, but the car seems to be running perfectly. I just want to get through the test in it!

No need to bring it to a dealer. Any indy mechanic would be able to connect it up. Dealers will just charge you mad money.

agree with Alanstainor, handbrake light remaining on constantly is often sign of low brake fluid. check immediately. Also, note from the RSA website about the test car:

    j) Today’s vehicles are fitted with a number of warning lamps on a dashboard that let the driver know if
certain critical safety, and performance features are not working properly. They are important safety
features and it is in the inteest of the driver and road safety that all safety systems in the vehicle are
in full working order. Consequently any warning Lights indicating a malfunction or a defect, that shows
before or during the test may lead to the non-conducting/non-completion of your test,

Thanks for all the replies! Car has plenty brake fluid, will get a mechanic to have a look at the handbrake cable and sensors etc. If notning is wrong there, on to the brake system. Hopefully nothing seriously wrong. Thanks again :D
