Hi, I have posted this on antiques and collectables but have not had any replies so far. Just wondering if anyone would have any idea of the value of this medal from 1890 Geraldines Tournament (Dublin) its sterling silver hallmarked Johnson of Dublin and engraved with my grandfathers name on the back.

I have no idea so this is purely conjecture, but there was a club known as Cabinteely Geraldines who were runners-up in the Dublin County Championship in 1890. The club still exist today as a junior club now known as Geraldines Patrick Morans.

Yes thank you I have since found that out and have been in contact with the club. Apparently they regularly had tournaments where outside teams could play and this medal was won there. I have since found out from an auction house that this medal has quite a decent value. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Mark Dorman would be your port of call there, but i would say only if you were planning on donating the medal to them

If all you can get for that medal is 1000 don't sell it apart from the huge family sentimental value it really is a work of art, it's beautifully crafted

Have to agree, unless they said a reserve of a grand. In which case you might get more, i would look into it a bit more maybe even contact croke park and seek their advice

Thanks guys, appreciate the advice, had thought it was a fairly low valuation considering age, maker and sterling silver. Has no real sentimental value for me as it was my grandfathers and I never knew him and the medal was almost thrown out when his last daughter died. May hold onto it for my son though, would be a nice thing to pass on to him.

great bit of family history :) my grandfather won some medals in the teens and 20's.i never seen any of them as i think he gave most of them away.the story was he gave them to lads going to america to give them a leg up.wether it was for them to show people to impress to get work etc or sell,i'm not sure.i have some of my dad's though :) good idea for a thread, old medals .
