My brother is looking for a bike for leisure around London. I've suggested a straight bar, skinny tire hybrid. Budget is about £300. Can anyone suggest a good bike shop and a bike in that price range?

A physical bike shop is best as he's better off getting fitted, although Evans weren't helpful when he enquired...

    Area is South London

    These guys...http://www.onyourbike.com/

Right beside London Bridge Tube. They do rentals and have some brilliant demo days too. I recently had the joy of taking out a top of the range Wilier for the afternoon while I was visiting.

Full fitting service and a big, big floorspace with a great tech area. The mechs are a wealth of information and are among the most helpful I have encountered.

There is an Evans around the block, but not as good...

HOWEVER!!! Evans have a price match policy instore where they will pricematch any item even online. They look it up on the computer and if it is in stock, you get it at the cheap online price of another retailer!!

When he is there, tell him to go to the Borough Market too...Best food and drink market I have seen..well worth a visit and open Thurs to Sat incl.

I would very strongly recomend these guys in Streatham/Norbury. Both for very highend stuff and entry level. Proper local bike shop, long established, large selection and Maurice is keen to talk about bikes with great enthusiasm all day long.
Have their own great kit as well.

Thanks. I'll have a look in there too.

Am beginning to realise how tight the budget is. I remember seeing specialized sirrus for €270 a year and a half ago, now I can't see anything good for £300...

Evans do have this for £250 though:

At that price point, evans is really your best bet, or cycle surgery and halfords, or else 2nd hand.

Cadence performance are out in Crystal Palace and one of the owners is Irish, but they focus more on high end stuff, same for Sigma Sport in Kingston and WyndyMilla. I think seabass cycles in camberwell do 2nd hand bikes, though are more high end vintage road bikes than entry level bikes.

Thanks for all the helpful input. We did eventually buy a Pinnacle from Evans... Three years ago, when i started the thread...

    Great bike though.
