Absolutely nothing but hearsay at this point. Related article here: http://www.independent.ie/opinion/analysis/treacy-hogan-state-to-extract-heavy-toll-from-struggling-motorists-2824609.html

In the meantime, car-sharing might become a popular option.

How can they possibly even consider tolls at Mallow or Croom on the N20 ?? It is a single lane national route. It is bad enough putting tolls on motorways, but if they put them on single lane road then it would be utter madness.

Funny how they mention the Tuam bypass, even thou the project is on hold

I'm fairly sure the tolls would be on the future M20 as it won't get built without them.

Nothing new on this, the same proposals that came out last year. The only difference is that the government have hired another set of consultants to advise them. Waste of money for findings we already know.

A fairer system would be to do something like making the current motor tax a €100 flat fee and raise excise based on the AA's figures of average 12,000 miles @ 30mpg (about 1800L). IMO this would be fairer than hitting certain routes. On the other hand it's probably not practical as the cost of fuel is high as it is, and not likely to go down.

I've just paid my tax for the year of €333. Under my proposal to raise the extra 233 euros, it'd cost about 13c/l. Now probably isn't a good time to mention that this would cost me less over the year, because in the last year I did about 8700 miles @ 37mpg (average).

I was taking that as a positive sign that it might get the green light.

re road toll extention to other roads,

Am i right to think that the ONLY new news this week is a tender for consultancy to examine the idea of new tolls along with existing tolls as outlined here:
    http://www.etenders.gov.ie/search/show/search_view.aspx?ID=JUL245795

so if anything, the introduction of new tolls is FURTHER away now than previously feared, in that now a tendering process must be completed to appoint a consultant and then wait on a report from the consultant which has to be considered and only then a decision made after all these stages.

So really the headline should have been, "Relief for Motorists, No extra tolls imminent in the near future" !!!

In fairness to Leo he has stated that he wants the the 3 major projects that were planned for starting this year (before he got in) to go ahead.

Whether they will or not is another story.
