Minors in an Adult English Class

    Hi,
Just wondering if anyone can point in the direction of some information on this. I work in an English School, and recently we've had a lot of spanish students arriving. Some of these students are under 18 - does anyone know if they are allowed to attend the same classes as adults or if they should be in seperate classes? And if they are allowed in, how responsible is the teacher for their well-being etc?

    thanks for any help!

In general, the this is not a good idea.

You do have a duty of care if you are teaching minors to ensure their safety.

So, I perhaps the language school needs to create a class for younger learners.

    Talk to your management asap.

    thanks for the quick reply!
I already talked to the boss, but needless to say he wasn't too interested in my arguments. I told them i was extremely uncomfortable with the idea of a minor being in the class but it didn't seem to make much difference.
I'm trying to find out if it's actually legal or illegal so I can legitimately refuse to allow it to happen, if it's illegal, or i can just take holidays while the minor is in the class, if it's legal..

I'm not sure that it is specifically illegal, but it's certainly not a great idea.

Check with ACELS, the agency that regulates EFL language schools in Ireland.
Just give them a ring. If you google, you'll get a phone number.

I'm posting on a smartphone so, it's a little tricky to find and paste info.

PLCs have minors in adult classes, there are usually at least a couple of under 18s especially at the beginning of the year. There is nothing illegal about it, but you do have to be aware that you have slightly different obligations to them, you might have to get parental permission for some things. You also have to have garda clearance if you are teaching minors.

How minor is minor ? How adult adult ? I've taught at summer centres where the age range was 17-22. It was only tricky on the trips we did as I had different responsibilities legally. The parents must know what they're sending three kid to so they must be ok with it. I understand your misgivings but it might be a none issue with regards to actual teaching.
