I am looking at ordering this

    http://www.elara.ie/productdetail.aspx?productcode=MMEB99B471

It has 2gigs of RAM. I can see it is So-dimm and it has 204 pins. Just wondeirng what are the different speeds and does it make much difference? Also, will it invalidate my warranty if I was to add two gigs of RAM to it after ordering? Thanks for any help

    It shouldn't affect your warranty.

Just remember if you want to upgrade to 4GB you'll have to buy two 2GB sticks. As the RAM is split into two 1GB sticks in that machine.

Not necessarily, I thing you can replace one of the sticks with a single 2GB or even 4GB stick. Look for a pdf manual on ASUS website and it will give you more details about possible memory configuration.

This one has 3GB so it might be enough for the moment and later you can simply throw away 1GB stick and replace it with 2GB or 4GB.

That was the one I originally ordered and they cancelled it yesterday due to a stocking issue, got so sick of dabs I ordered the linked one above from elara last night. Thanks for your help I will look for that and I'll see how it is with 2gigs of RAM first

Ok. I checked the manual but they only say to use RAM modules from authorized dealers :(

But If they sell it with 3GB (1x1GB and 1x2GB) it should also work with 5GB (1x1GB and 1x4GB), I think

Yes it should, the specs say upto a max of 8GB

Yeah it should work because its the i3 processor is 64-bit - but I'd have a good read through the spec to find out because the motherboard itself could be restricted. It should say somewhere in the spec what the maximum amount of ram it supports is.

forget the extra memory and buy a decent laptop with proper graphics, dont understand people buying laptops with wintel bs and then complaining down the line why this that and the other thing wont work.

I'm not too concerned about graphics, I'll only be using the internet, word, excel, probably sage and then downloading photos from my camera and doing some light editing in my spare time, dont have much use for massive graphics in a laptop

yes, thats grand but for the sake of 100e or so you could do a lot better.

    just my 2c.

intel graphics should be banned tbh. they can hardly run solatire.

:D I don't think it's bad. If you use your laptop to, let's say, diagnose cars or program industrial robots etc. Intel does what it's designed for. The problem is that people who don't know much about computers are seldom given a honest advice from salespeople.

BTW you can get 8GB for this laptop for a lot less than 100e. For example 2x4GB Crucial modules cost 64e from their official webstore. If you try hard you can get them for 50e
