K&N air filter

I was thinking of putting a K&N type air intake into my peugeot 406 2l petrol in-lieu of the old air box flat filter. I have a suspicion that my engine emissions could already be fairly high and am worried that, although it would improve performance, it might not get through the NCT.
I dont want to do anything to the car that will have to be undone again before it goes to the test centre.

Does anybody have any experience with this type of thing or could reccomend the best one to buy?

If you are going to do it IMO you should do two things.

First, do some basic research of what effects/gains etc a decent open filter will make to you engine to see if its worth it. They don't just automatically give you more power.

Second, get a proper kit designed to fit you specific car/engine from a decent manufacterer like K&N(genuine, not K&N 'type') or pipercross etc. Universal filters rarely give any gains and usually have the oposite effect.

They will not have any adverse effect on the emmissions of a healthy electronically controlled engine.
