Buying a cornet

My son has expressed an interest in learning to play the cornet. He read about trumpets and cornets online and decided on the cornet. He also plays piano, violin and viola.

I looked on Amazon and not surprisingly see prices from €99 to over €600. Haven't a clue what to get. None of them have many user reviews. There is a possibility he might end up playing in a group or youth orchestra as he has done with his other instruments.

Would anyone have any recommendations or tips?

    Thanks.

I'd say your best bet would be to have a look around for Brass Bands in your area. They usually have a beginners band and will give lessons and the use of a cornet for very little, it'll give him time to develope the correct embouchure and let him decide whether he wants to continue with playing a brass instrument.

If you do decide to go the other route then Besson and Yamaha make great quality student cornets and definitely get him a few lessons as it's nearly impossible to learn without developing bad habits.
    Hope this helps,
    K

    Thanks koshea.

I made enquiries and the local VEC do cornet lessons including use of an instrument. :)
