I think my iMac has suffered with sudden death syndrome. Its an Intel dual core iMac. I left it in sleep mode last night and when i got up today it wouldn't wake. I unplugged the power, tried to reset the SMC but it wouldn't come back to life.

    Fortunately i back up everything.

So any idea what issue I might be looking at and the cost? Anyone recommend a repair centre? Its outside of warranty.

also is this an opportunity to upgrade the innards? I already have max RAM (4gb) but the HD is only 250gb. Anything else I could upgrade on the inside?

    Thanks peeps!

does the screen come on at all? if not then it's likely the psu.

If you haven't already done so, unplug all external devices like portable hard drives and see how you go. Same thing happened me at the weekend. I had an external hard drive plugged in but not plugged into the mains which was preventing it from booting up properly.

    Hope it works out.

Note: There are two mac service centers in Dublin but Mactivate are by far the better crowd to deal with. Best of luck with it.

sounds like possibly a dodgy capacitor on the PSU.

    Yeah possibly

So it seems that after a few mins if I perform a SMC reset then it will turn on for about 15 mins. I checked fan speeds and temps but everything is normal

I performed a PRAM reset this morning and it stayed on for about 40 mins before I left for work. If it's still on when I get home maybe that's all it needed? Although I wouldn't have expected the issue to have anything to do with PRAM?

I'll know when I get home anyway

So I got home and the iMac was still up and running. I guess resetting PRAM did the trick!

You may not be ' out of the woods ' yet. This has the signs of a failing PRAM battery. Quote from this website.

If these settings constantly get reset even when you have not manually reset the PRAM, the computer's logic board battery may need replacing.

This was a regular problem with PPC Macs.

Its an Intel Mac. A techie guy informed me that seemingly when an iMac has been moved about its not uncommon for these things to happen and reset usually does the trick.
