Croatia - need help to book Hvar - wondering about validity of website

I'm looking to book accomodation for a few nights in August in Hvar because I'm worried it'll be so busy that finding accomodation will be a lot of hassle.

I've found a lot of places via this website:

    http://www.croatia-hotels-apartments.com

Has anyone used it? If so is it reliable/safe? If not, does anyone have any other websites they could suggest?

    Cheers :)

If you use skyscanner.net, and click on hotels, enter your dates and city, it will go through a dozen booking sites for every hotel and you will have a good choice.
Before you pick the cheapest booking site, google it with the words feedback / review / scam to see what's there. Sometimes if the price is too good to be true, then it is.

Try and use one of the more reputable booking sites.
Some of the booking sites which skyscanner throws up in its search have varied reviews.

Has anyone been there/have any recommendations on apartments?

Would it be too late to leave it until arriving on the island to book accomodation in Hvar town for a few nights? (6 people)

Its a few years ago but back in 2003 four of us headed out to Hvar for a couple of nights, had nothing booked at all, just got of ferry and there was loads of people there offering rooms. We got a grand spot but unfortunetly I cant rem name. It was one room with bunks but done us fine, think it was 12euro a night each. It was clean and had showers, etc. It was the first two weeks in august so would have been a pretty busy time. I'll never forget running after a bus, dying with hangover at 10.30am in 36degree heat cos if we didnt make that last ferry we would have missed out flight home!!!

    Can recommend this place: http://www.hostelbookers.com/hostels/croatia/hvar/47161/

While there are dorms available there's also a couple of apartment rooms (think they're advertised as "deluxe") which have private balconies etc. Stayed in one for a few nights and no complaints at all. Really good place to meet other travellers in the bar too if that's your thing.

Hvar is an absolutely incredible place to relax. Enjoy!

similar story here, we had accomodation booked and were sitting the hotel bar and a local came up to us offering us an appartment at a cheaper rate. would have went but i already paid up front for the hotel.

I'd a less great experience with the local accommodation offerings in Split (the night before getting the ferry to Hvar). It was cheap but "basic" doesn't quite cover it! :p

don't bother booking IMO. like others said, you'll be inundated with offers when you get off the ferry. there's also agencies around too where you can get accommodation. you'll pay over the odds booking a hostel/hotel. in my experience of croatia, the quality of these rooms is very high. if you're not happy you can always decide not to take it and find somewhere else. oh and you can haggle too!
