i'm here hoping to find a good way to quit my worst habit....biting my nails. i recently got engaged and lucky enough my gut said it was gong to happen so i got fake nails done. only thing is i can't afford to get them done all the time.

i would love to be able to once and for all quit biting my poor nails. my poor gran when i was a girl put a bet on between me and my cousin to see who would stop doing it first, she said she would give us 5 pounds (currency at the time) and none of us have won it yet.

has anyone got any good idea's that i could once and for all kick that habit in the butt.

    thanks

"I kicked the habit, kicked the habit, kicked the habit....."

Try to replace a bad habit with a new good one. Like instead of biting your nails try imagining bloody infected puss filled hands.....or something.

Cut your fingers off or else wear gloves 24/7!

There's a little bottle of stuff you can get from the chemist which is designed to put people off biting their nails. Can see or smell it but can taste it. My mam used to use it on me when I was a sprog?

Next time you find yourself biting your nails, stop and punch yourself really hard in the face.

If you do this consistently– eventually you’ll stop.

Wear rat traps at the ends of your fingers.

It's not such a bad habit (unless you bite the skin around the nails until it bleeds). At least you've not taken up the meth – that's a fooker to kick.

I tried that. it doesn't taste that bad... so it didn't work for me.

    =-=

When you bite the nails, don't chew the nails you've bitten off. You'll be less likely to bite them, then.

Take up smoking, that way you have something to do with your hands.

I've nearly started biting my nails since I stopped smoking as much. Realised what was going on so I just cut them short.

Root in your ear with each finger, taste of ear wax every time ya bite your nails will soon put you off.

Trying to stop it too, been doing it since I was little though so it is tough. The hardest part is sometimes you do it without even realizing. I get a weird sense of comfort from doing it, it eases anxiety I think but hurts like a bitch when ya do it too much.

    :/

I have an even worse habit that nail biting, I bite the skin around my nails, until it bleeds. I bite the hang nails right back until they are painful. My fingers look a mess. Cant seem to stop doing it either.

    hello my fellow nail biter!!

Its a horrible habit, and iv been trying to stop it with years. I was always so jealous of people with long lovely nails.

I have tried everything. Dont waste your money on the nail polish in the chemists. Ya it tastes horrible but after the first day you get immune to the taste and you'll still bite your nails.

Had lovely fake nails for my brother wedding, had them on for two weeks, couldnt believer how long my nails had got, but then i still ate them .

Im a smoker, so a previous comment saying start smoking - its Bull, cause you get board at work when you cant have a fag and eat your nails more cause they smell like fags...

SO ya after however many years, iv no suggestions, fake nails is your better option. I went to a friend of mine who done acrilic nails(sorry for spelling) they werent that expensive and they stayed on for weeks so that could be an option.

    Best of Luck

Hi op, I bit my nails for years and then a friend said "why don't you just stop putting your dirty fingers in your mouth" made perfect sense. You wouldn't go around licking door handles but that's exactly what you do when you bite your nails...it disgusted me so much I stopped biting them.

TL;DR keep them out of your gob! :pac:

I don't bite my nails as much as I pick at them. I kinda pick at them, the top bit gets loose and i pull off a strip at the top. I realize I'm doing it while I'm doing it, but still can't stop.

Get braces. It hurts too much when you get them so you have to stop doing it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,454 ✭✭✭weemcd

its willpower, that varnish stuff you put on your hands won't stop you biting your nails, you will continue to do so, they just taste disgusting. Also you will taste it any time you are eating and use your hands.

I've given up for weeks and probably months on end, but I go back. The only thing I can really suggest is never let them get any length, soon as you can clip them religiously so you cannot bite on the nail.

You will find the habit of putting ur finger in your mouth and chewing is one part of it, same as a smoker likes to hold a cigarette. You would need to find something to substitue this with. Perhaps try chewing gum when the urge gets you. Other than that I don't know, as I've never given up anything in my life except mabye drinking to excess. Clipped my fingernails today for the first time in ages, and I realised why I bite my nails, clipping them with metal clippers feels so wrong, even as a child i never liked the sensation.

    Humans are strange creatures.

When you get a real habit come back to us. There are people on here who drink themselves to sleep every morning....

I'm trying to do the same thing.

What I'm doing is only biting my left thumb. I figure if I keep at it long enough I'll be so pleased to have 9 immaculate fingers that I'll have the motivation to stop at the left thumb, and if not, well I'm willing to sacrifice one nail to save it's comrades.

Just stop doing it OP. Try and be conscious of what you're doing next time you go to bite them and just dont do it.

Same here. :( Not all the time, comes and goes depending on my mood.

I think I read somewhere that it takes 3 weeks to kick a habit, so now I just tell myself, "Okay, I won't do X for 3 weeks and see how that goes". It feels like you're just taking a little break so it's easier to deal with but when you actually don't do something for that long, you generally do get over it. I do anyway.

    Hi OP.

Get one of those thick elastic bands and put it on your upper arm. Everytime you think about or accidently bite your nails twang it onto your skin so you feel a sharp pain.

Eventually, if all goes to plan, you will be conditioned to associate pain with biting your nails and will stop doing it.

    It's a Pavlov's dog kinda thingy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,811 ✭✭✭xoxyx

Hey OP - I feel your pain!

I bit my nails 'till I was 17 and nothing: not promises of presents; not the stuff you paint on your nails to make them taste bad (I loved the taste of it); and not the fact that I was hurting my fingers 'cause I bit my nails to the quick, would make me stop.

    Here's how I quit.

You know when you've decided to quit and you promise yourself never to bite your nails again. And then, you find yourself mid-bite, and you figure "well, sure I've started, so I may as well finish."

    Well, NO!!!

When I finally managed to quit biting my nails and found myself mid-bite - I moved away. Every time I found myself with my nails in my mouth (and there were a lot of times), I said "No. No more." to myself and, eventually, after not indulging my habit, I got out of it.

It took a while - and you can't give yourself any exemptions, but it worked.

    Good luck!!!
