Try cutting some turf and you'll find out who owns it sharpish :D

BNM own a lot of bog in the Midlands, some bog is a S.A.C so therefore it is not touched.

Blanket bog and raised bog can often be comanage so several people (used to) have the right to cut turf there, also stopped by EU directives, so now untouched.
Then there is bog waiting for Coillte to plant it.

No shooting on SAC/preserve ,BNM or Coillte. Private bog, you may ask landowners.
I personally have shooting on some bog in lovely laois :D

As always, shooting anywhere prohibited, or without permission will get you in a lot of hot water (not bog water ;) )

If you are unsure ask the local farmers who owns it ;)

BNM is a NO Go area for a shooter, state land.
Not sure if they lease soem of it like Coillte, but there is feck all on working bog to shoot at ;)

You will find some rare bird conservation on the blanket bog on the laois offaly border, no shooting but a lovely walk, ~9km .

I have shooting on some commanage, but it can be awkward as all residents of the area have to let you shoot the commanage.

Look it up on the land registry to see who actually owns it.

and even if it is commonage or bnm the sporting rights could still be owned by a third party in a hang over from the 'old days '

How wrong you are Tack. I for one was working on bnm bog today and spotted two fallow deer that ran across a hacko pile! Countless deer tracks aswell. Then again bnm land is a no go.;)

The Edge of a Bog more than the Middle of one.

I think you will find that i said some of my shooting is on bog land ;)

But not out in the Middle of cultivated bog ;)

As I brought up a while ago, commonage is a tricky subject. You do need permission from all farmers involved is SOME cases, but as I recently found out,our local gun club bought the sporting rights to nearly all the commonage in the area years ago,so as long as you're a member, blast away! :):):)

    My sympathies

If you really really want to know who owns what try the Property Registration Authority ( there is a cost ,its not conclusive but its the best we've got)

the landowner and or the person entitled to the sporting rights have to give you permission
    then your ok
BUT most bogs are in multiple ownership and many have layers of 'rights'
eg a person may have the turbary right but not the fee simple or sporting rights

If you are on the bog with the springer a crisp December morn and if you are asked to account for your presence there ( if one of the zealots come on you you must be able to demonstrate that you have permission -its an oddity in the Wildlife Act but the State need not have to demonstrate that you are hunting unlawfully it is for you to show the court that you had permission )
but if you create enough doubt - then your away free

but it always better to have permission .

A lot of bogs have their sporting rights remain vested in the Estates (or their trustees) which ceded ownership titles for a price to the various land reform measures in the late 1880s early 1900s
Some of the sporting rights transferred to the state via the Land Commission
Some one somewhere owns the bog and someone some where owns the sporting rights

One last point -I love a last point- many bogs are designated NHA SAC or SPA and some owned by NPWS

They are very busy processing Deer Permits at the moment to be fair!

Look up your local ranger and give them a call, their number is listed on the contacts of NPWS

We pay rights every year to the Department of Heritage, Enviorment and local government.. we find a lot of lads out shooting in it because they think anyone can because its commonage. Be careful... we've had a lot of rows!

Hunting over commonage where you have a right is a curse ,
If you have 'a right' then in exercise of your right you can bring a case against anyone you identify hunting without permission on your ground

but its not worth the bother these days too many unhinged people out there

I didnt know the Dept EHLG leased ground to anyone ....where abouts is it
