Well anyhow i had plans with a group of my mates that didn't work out and then i tried with a second few after the first fail but the story is now that that isn't possible anymore...so its basically just me...am only on partial grant and no work so can't afford the paying upfront for student accommodation...

just look for rooms on daft and galway advertiser site. there's plenty of houses in galway for rent. if you want somewhere close to college, look in newcastle or headford road area. rent should be around €60 mark. you've loads of time to look for houses yet. most landlords won't advertise it yet until maybe late july/early august:)

A lot of students end up thrown in with people they don't know in Galway so you shouldn't worry too much about it as the vast, vast majority of students are friendly, decent people.

Rented accommodation is advertised in many ways in Galway, but the main places to check are:
    - Galway Advertister (their accommodation lists are on sale from their offices on Wednesday afternoons, but you can also check online at www.advertiser.ie)
    - Galway Property Management (http://www.galwaypm.com/)

You should email Brian Grant, the SU Welfare Officer, to talk about your options for September; su.welfare@nuigalway.ie

Search for shared accommodation on daft.ie . I've moved into a good few houses now without knowing the others and it's always worked out great. Great way to expand your circle of friends too.

Get 5 or 6 lined up for a day to view them and go with your favourite. And not necessarily the best room, I wouldn't fancy moving in if it's just the landlord you meet and not the fellow housmates. Be wary of rooms that are freshly painted - caught one landload in the act of painting over the damp as I was early.

I got my current place a few weeks ago and there's very few people looking and lots of choice at the moment. If you're renting a room in a house it's usually 1 months rent as a security deposit and the months rent in advance. Have the money ready to secure the right place if you find it.

I viewed one house that was a very nice double room, 10mins from NUIG, 10mins from town, for ~€65/week. It wasn't available until next week... I needed somewhere 3 weeks ago. I can PM you details if you like. Edit: It's been let since.

Oh and the closer to September you leave it, the more frustrating it gets. Rooms are snapped up much quicker and the housemates will often want to meet a selection of people then decide who they want to move in.

I'd second that,if it's an oldish house and it's been freshly painted,i.e smells of paint, then the place is more than likely covered in mould.

Along with paint thing being a a good indicator of dampness, checking the inside of wardrobes for mould/damp walls and rooms being very humid upon entry are two other tell tale signs of dampness. If you wait 'til the week after race week to begin viewing you should have a week on the majority of people looking for accommodation.

Lastly,I know it sounds very obvious but choose where you live carefully. The small things such as distance from the nearest shop and size of the fridge/freezer vs. the number of people living in a particular dwelling should be given some thought as well.
